Emphasis:
Focus on developing explosive hip action to improve both offensive and defensive movements. This drill enhances lateral quickness, agility, and coordination by emphasizing dynamic hip rotation and powerful leg drive. It’s ideal for athletes who need to pivot, change direction quickly, or accelerate from a stationary position, benefiting sports like track and field, basketball, football, and soccer.

Instructions:
- Start out going to your left (1).
- Bring the right leg up and across your body to step to the left (2).
- Rotate your hips and skip to the left (3).
- Repeat with the right leg coming up and going across the body.
- Continue this motion for a set distance – such as between two cones set 10 yards apart.
- When you reach the opposite cone, turn and go back using the left leg for the crossover motion.
Coaching Tips:
- Drive the knee and turn your hip to engage the core and maximize rotational power.
- Bring your foot right up under the hamstring – avoid reaching with your feet to maintain proper form and efficiency.
- Step down to the ground with control for greater power, ensuring that each step is deliberate and strong.
Tips for Younger Athletes
- Encourage younger athletes to focus on maintaining balance throughout the movement. Remind them to keep their upper body upright and their core engaged to avoid leaning too far forward or backward.
- Reinforce the importance of a consistent rhythm during the crossover motion to build coordination and muscle memory. Suggest counting out loud or using a metronome to help with timing.
- Remind them to look ahead toward the direction they are moving, rather than down at their feet, to improve spatial awareness and maintain good posture.
Tips for Older Athletes
- Challenge more experienced athletes to increase their speed during the crossover, emphasizing the quickness of their hip rotation and leg drive. Encourage them to push off the ground with more force to enhance explosiveness.
- Focus on optimizing their arm movement. Remind them to drive their arms powerfully in coordination with their legs to maintain momentum and balance throughout the drill.
- Encourage them to minimize ground contact time by landing softly and quickly transitioning into the next step. This will help improve agility and quickness, which are crucial for competitive performance.
Sets/Reps:
Complete 3 sets of 3-5 reps. Rest as needed between sets to maintain high intensity and proper form.
